Diflucan, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, was initially approved by the FDA in 1995 for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms in dogs. In 2000, this approval followed a pattern that included three distinct stages:
During the first stage of the infection, the oral and intravenous (IV) antibiotics were administered, typically intravenously, in divided doses to prevent the growth of the susceptible microorganism, such asEscherichia coli. The IV antibiotics are generally given intravenously, with a typical initial dose of 1-2 grams per kg of body weight per day for an initial period of 6-12 days, followed by an additional dose of 2-4 grams per kg every other day for a maximum of 7-8 days. This was followed by a dosage of 2-4 grams per kg every other day for a maximum of 12 days, with a maintenance dose of 1 gram of cephalosporins per kg per day. In the third stage, the IV antibiotics were administered orally and the dosage was adjusted in response to the clinical signs and symptoms. The third stage typically requires a maintenance dose of 1 gram of cephalosporins per kg every day. The total length of treatment in the three stages was about 5 to 6 weeks. The clinical signs were usually severe or non-specific, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. The signs were either:
